Maximizing Singleness: Seeking the Whole You
1 Corinthians 7:35 (KJV)
35And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.
Here is a bold consideration: Singleness is not a disease. Singleness is an opportunity. Far too many Christian singles find themselves bombarded with the stigma that an unmarried life is something from which one needs to be cured. There is no doubt that covenant marriage is holy, blessed and ordained by God. However, the single life is just as valid and offers an incredible opportunity to focus on seeking wholeness and on serving God. (1 Corinthians 7:32-35 KJV)
Maximizing the single life can be one of the greatest and most often neglected challenges for a believer. There are countless teachings on how to prepare for a mate, how to find a mate, how to become a good mate and even how to sink, reel and hook the perfect mate. However, these all have one thing in common—they are focused on external expectations while neglecting the necessity of internal focus. Simply put, some Christian singles are so anxiously seeking knowledge about how to pursue a relationship with a perfect mate that they are losing focus on their responsibility to seek and pursue a reconciliation with God—the only way to true wholeness.
Singleness does not have to be perceived as a difficult and lonely road. Whether your call to singleness is a permanent or a temporary state, trust God and dedicate your heart to pleasing Him.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the opportunity and freedom in living a single life today. Father, strengthen my heart to be focused on you, with a fervent desire to seek your kingdom first and a genuine belief that all things will be added unto me according to Your good and perfect will for my life. Help me overcome loneliness, to direct my physical energy to preparing my mind, body and soul for the work of your kingdom and attend upon You without distraction. And help me to trust that you are in control. Propel me to wholeness and deliver me from being married to the world’s expectations for me. God, let Your Holy Spirit remind me daily that you have called me by name and I am yours. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
